Let's be honest: uncorking a Magnum is always a great satisfaction. Bringing it to the table as if it were a trophy, with the expectant gaze of the guests who stare at the large bottle and savor its contents...
Oh yes, sometimes you really need to treat yourself well.
The Magnum format is not only very attractive from an aesthetic point of view but is recognized as the format in which the wine (the same wine contained in a normal bottle or in a 3 or more liter bottle) is best . For what reason? To explain it we need to get a little technical: in general, the optimal maturation of the wine depends on the relationship between the volume of liquid and the surface of the glass. In Magnum formats this ratio is perfect , the refinement speed is slower than a traditional bottle and faster than a 3 liter bottle. The air space of approximately 2.5 cl that is created between the cork and the wine gradually binds with its contents. In a 0.375 ml or 750 ml bottle, the release ratio goes from 1 to 2 and from 1 to 4 for the Magnum. Precisely this amount of air creates the perfect volume in the Magnum which allows the polyphenols in the whites or the anthocyanins in the reds to gradually refine, without receiving stress harmful to aging. Furthermore, the glass of the Magnum is thicker than that of the traditional 750 ml bottle and allows a perfect balance between pressure and constant volume inside. The aromas themselves are more intense and in sparkling wines the gradual release of oxygen allows for fine and persistent bubbles.
